Geegan Named Third Team Academic All-America

Geegan is the second WSU volleyball player to ever be named Academic All-America, joining Erica Miller in 1999

Nov. 28, 2007

Tara Geegan, a senior middle blocker on the Wright State volleyball team, has been named ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Geegan (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs), who currently holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Early Childhood Education, has earned High Honors every quarter at Wright State and was selected Academic All-Horizon League last season. The League's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October, Geegan was chosen Academic All-Horizon League in 2006 and was one of four female recipients of the Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given annually to the Wright State student-athlete with the top grade point average and is either a junior or senior.

On the court, Geegan was named All-Horizon League this season after finishing fifth in the League in blocks per game and seventh in hitting percentage. She was also selected as the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on November 5, having received the honor following a week that saw her hit .370 with 34 kills in three home matches with 15 blocks.

Earlier this season, Geegan was named to the Sheraton Hilton Invitational and to the Raider Challenge All-Tournament Teams, raising her all-tournament selections over the past two years to five, including MVP honors at the 2006 Raider Challenge.

The Academic All-America program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Wright State, which finished 14-18 overall and 9-7 in the Horizon League, advanced to the League semifinals before falling to eventual champion and NCAA participant Cleveland State.
