DAYTON, OH - The Wright State men's tennis program garnered their first individual award of the 2007 season last week at the monthly Student Athlete Advisory Council breakfast. Tony Teufel, a senior on the squad, was named the September Athlete of the Month.
Teufel was a force as the Raiders opened the season hosting the Wright State Invitational. The senior posted a 3-1 record in the Flight A singles draw, falling in the championship match, and posted a 2-1 record in Flight B doubles.
In singles, Teufel defeated an opponent from Xavier in the opening round and then took a pair of matches from Duquesne opponents before falling to Doug Matthews of Xavier in the finals.
In doubles, the senior teamed with Jan Alafriz to defeat Xavier and Dayton in the Flight B draw. The two dropped their opening match to Duquesne by a score of 9-8(6).
The SAAC Athlete of the Month award is awarded by voting done during the monthly meetings of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. The SAAC is comprised of two members of all 16 intercollegiate athletic programs at WSU.
Teufel and the Raiders will return to action at the Wilson/ITA Fall Regionals hosted by the University of Minnesota on October 18.
