INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Wright State men's soccer team garnered honors from the Horizon League on Tuesday afternoon when they released the 2007 Men's Soccer All-Horizon League squads. Freshman Carl Ebers was selected to the All-League Second Team, garnered All-Newcomer team honors and was named the Newcomer of the Year in the Horizon League.
Ebers joined the Raiders from Malmo, Sweden and was an anchor in the midfield for WSU this season. The rookie started 18 or 19 matches this season and tallied a goal and an assist this season. Ebers assisted on the match winning tally at IPFW and then netted a marker in the regular season finale against IUPUI.
"Carl has been a solid performer in out midfield this season," Head Coach Mike Tracy said. "He has done a great job anchoring our midfield unit and continues a strong tradition of Raider players to earn the Newcomer of the Year honor."
With the Newcomer of the Year honor, Ebers adds to WSU's league leading total players to garner that honor. The freshman is the fifth player to be named to top rookie in the league, two more than any other member, and joins teammate and 2006 Newcomer of the Year Braden Fleak as only the fourth set of teammates to win the honor in back-to-back seasons.
It is the second time WSU has garnered back-to-back Newcomer of the Year honors, with Marco Elcock and Bret Jones winning the award in 1998 and 1999. The five WSU players to garner the honor include Elcock, Fleak, Jones, Ricky Strong and now Ebers.
With the Second Team All-League honor, Ebers gives WSU a member of the All-League Team during each of their 14 years as a member of the Horizon League.
The Raiders will be in action on Friday, October 9 as they will open Horizon League Tournament play against Valparaiso at Alumni Field. The Green and Gold will entertain the Crusaders starting at 7:00 on the pitch.
