March 3, 2008
Wright State men's basketball head coach Brad Brownell has been named the Horizon League Co-Coach of the Year while sophomore guard Vaughn Duggins received first-team honors as announced by the League officials on Monday. Cleveland State coach Gary Waters also was named Co-Coach of the Year.
Brownell led the Raiders to their second straight 20-win season this year with a current record 20-9, 12-6. WSU and CSU tied for second place in the standings as the Raiders will take the third seed into the Horizon League Tournament against Detroit Tuesday night at 7 pm. This marks the third time in six years that Brownell has been honored in this fashion after receiving similar honors twice while head coach at UNC Wilmington of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2003 and 2006.
Duggins, a member of the Horizon League Newcomer Team a year ago, has led the Raiders in scoring 15 times. His 13.9 scoring average ranks in the top 10 league wide as he sits among the conference leaders in assists, free throw percentage, steals, three point percentage, assist-turnover ratio and minutes played. Duggins, a native of Pendleton, Indiana, has scored more than 700 career points in less than two seasons for the Raiders, starting all but once during that period.
Butler's Mike Green was chosen the League's Player of the Year as the Bulldogs' Matt Howard took home the Newcomer of the Year award. Terry Evans of Green Bay was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Jarrod Loyd of Valparaiso was named the League's top Sixth Man.
Head coaches, three media members from each school and the sports information directors voted for these honors.
