Coaches' Philosophy and Goal
The WSU baseball coaches have over one hundred years of combined experience as players and coaches from the amateur level up to the major league level. The goal of each coach is to show leadership for each player spiritually, scholastically, and athletically. A winning team happens when each player develops in all areas of his life.
It is the desire of each coach to help each player reach the goals he has set for himself. Many times this is an opportunity to play professional baseball and advance to the major leagues. Players with ability and desire will reach these goals at WSU.
Facilities and Equipment
The baseball facilities at Wright State are second to none in the Midwest. Nischwitz Stadium, dedicated in April, 2000, was engineered with outstanding drainage and a complete sprinkling system. The first of three phases of the new stadium includes below-ground-level dugouts, theater seats, full infield tarpaulin, two batting cages, team, umpire, and coaches' rooms with outstanding lighting for night games. The facility hosts many other teams each year, including Southwest Ohio Regionals and AAA high school tournaments and several summer amateur tournaments.
For those players who do not participate in other sports, WSU baseball is a full year program. Fall practice begins the first week of school in September and continues through October with daily practice and instruction for each player as well as over fifteen practice games. November through January is spent conditioning on several weight-training programs with personal guidance from the WSU strength coach, in addition to daily use of batting tees and quickness drills and other individual skill development activities.
January starts the preseason indoor conditioning held in the Nutter Center McLin Gym. A full-size indoor batting cage for both pitching and hitting drills combines with a synthetic gym floor for full infield and simulated outfield drills as well as simulated game condition drills. Visits by current professional players and scouts are commonplace.
Qualified trainers not only treat injuries but prevent them through proper training and muscle development.
Schedule and Travel
A schedule of fifty-six games each year packed with outstanding NCAA Division I opponents gives each player outstanding challenges and exposure to numerous major league scouts. Included have been games with Arizona, Austin Peay, Creighton, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Hawaii, Indiana, Indiana State, Kent State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Western Carolina, and many others. Wright State University competes in the Horizon League against Butler, Cleveland State, Detroit, University of Illinois-Chicago, Youngstown State and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Our schedule includes annual spring training trips to Arizona, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, or other warm weather locations. Most travel is done via air-conditioned scenic cruiser, but some long trips are made on commercial airlines.
Many home games and tournament games are broadcast on the WSU radio station WWSU, 106.9 FM, and some games are on local radio stations. Selected games are televised each year, and all are covered by the major local newspapers.
Academics
Academics are a priority at Wright State. Study table for freshmen as
well as certain upperclassmen is scheduled daily. A special mentoring
program is unique to the baseball program where upperclassmen with
excellent grades serve as mentors to freshmen and other team members
needing academic help. These mentors help students learn ways to
succeed. For students who have difficulty, free tutoring services are
also available from the university.
All incoming freshman athletes must have been cleared through the NCAA
Clearinghouse. The paperwork is available through your high school
guidance counselor. The process can be a lengthy one.
Living Accommodations
Many of the athletes at Wright State University have found the
on-campus living quarters an exciting experience, both in the air
conditioned dormitories and in campus apartments, as well as off campus
condominiums. Living in these accommodations helps the student acquire
responsible habits and develop independence and maturity.
Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Jobs
Financial aid is offered to any student who is in need and qualifies
by completing the standard Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA). FAFSA forms can be obtained through the WSU Office of Financial
Aid (937-775-5721) and most high schools. The Office of Financial Aid
can also discuss possible academic scholarships with prospective
student-athletes who meet their academic guidelines.
Athletic grants-in-aid are awarded to athletes who have been drafted
by major league baseball teams or who have excelled in high school or
junior college or who have been recommended by professional scouts. A
player fitting this category and wishing to be considered for a
grant-in-aid should complete a WSU baseball questionnaire and submit it
-- along with the information concerning the draft or names of two major
league scouts who would recommend him -- to the Head Coach.
