AKRON, OH - The Wright State swimming and diving teams continued to compete for the 2008 Horizon League Championships, now at the University of Akron. The men's squad extended their first place lead to 88 points, while the women trail Green Bay by 64 points heading into the final day of competition.
The men's squad posted four first place finishes and closed out the day with a new championship record in the 800 yard freestyle relay. Just before the men's team captured the title, the women's squad posted a new championship record in the same event.
Nathan Demchuk, Warren Thompson and Micah Belew all captured individual crowns on day three. Demchuk posted a win in the 400 yard Individual Medley with a time of 3:56.21, just missing the championship record by two-tenths of a second. Belew won the title in the 200 yard Freestyle and Thompson won his second straight title in the 100 yard Butterfly event.
The Raiders lead on the men's side by 88 points over host Cleveland State and are 91 points ahead of third place Milwaukee. UIC sits in third place, Green Bay in fourth and Valparaiso sits in sixth place.
Jessica Weidert continued to swim at a furious pace as she posted a victory and a championship record for the second straight evening. The senior opened day three of the championships with by setting a championship record in the 400 yard Individual Medley, besting the old record by exactly one-second.
In the 200 yard Freestyle event, WSU swept the top two spots as Mabel Fernandez edged teammate Vicky Tafur by one-tenth of a second for the title. Each competitor broke the championship record, with Fernandez's time of 1:51.66 will set the new league standard.

WSU will return to the pool for the final day of the championships on Saturday.
